Work Environment

We work in the Emergency Department of a 78-bed hospital on the Pacific Coast of Northern California treating approximately 25,000 patients annually. We have eleven full-time Emergency Department physicians and four full-time nurse-practitioners and physician assistants. Most of our days are four-shift days with nine hours of physician double-coverage during the busiest hours. We admit to a hospitalist service as well as to primary care doctors in the community, and have access to a Level II Trauma service sixty miles away with helicopter ambulance service based in Ukiah. Our hospital is the only inpatient facility in the Ukiah Valley, and as the largest hospital in the region, it is the referral facility for all of Mendocino County.

Pacific Redwood Medical Group has managed the emergency department at Ukiah Valley Medical Center for over 25 years since our inception. We have grown despite the pressures against small independent emergency department groups. We have a remarkable record of retention; in fact, in the past twenty years only three physicians have left our group, all to retire. Our working relationship with the ED nurses and especially with our present ED Nurse Manager is outstanding; to this end, we established and have financed an ED nursing education fund for years to promote excellence in those nurse practitioners with whom we work. We are well-organized, democratic in practice, without pay differential among the members of our group. We have a robust retirement account with both medical and business reimbursement plans. We have worked over the years to establish ourselves as an indispensable part of the hospital and of the medical staff.

Lifestyle

PRMG is a close-knit group of medical professionals who have a similar work ethic, and share a common desire for balance between work and the rest of life. We are supportive of one another, and realize the important position we have as the gateway to the hospital. Many of us live as far as sixty miles away from the hospital, yet choose to work here because our group has attracted like-minded, well-trained, mutually-respectful physicians, physician assistants and family nurse-practitioners.

We live and work in a beautiful area of Northern California, in a lovely wine-growing valley forty miles inland from the Mendocino Coast and two hours north of San Francisco. There are innumerable outdoor activities nearby – in our free time we can be found surfing at the coast, white water kayaking on our local rivers, or simply hiking some the wilderness areas at our fingertips. The city of Ukiah is growing rapidly, yet still offers a small-town feel.

Our Community

Our physicians are also connected professionally to the community of Ukiah – one physician serves as Public Health Officer of Mendocino County, another is the EMS director of Mendocino County; a third physician runs the TB clinic in Ukiah and is the medical director of the local helicopter ambulance service. Our medical group runs an occupational health clinic and contracts with the city of Ukiah to manage medical care at the local juvenile detention center. We feel these activities make us even more indispensable to the hospital and to our community.

We are looking for physicians to join our group who will similarly appreciate the values and work ethic we have managed to create in our work environment.
