Joseph E. Otto
FNP, PT

Joe Otto began his professional work as a Nurse Practitioner in 1978. He worked for a private physician in a rural town in Northern California. His work with the ED physicians at Ukiah Valley Medical Center began in 1982. For several years he worked in the ED as a Nurse Practitioner and then in 1985 he was asked to help create an occupational medicine department as a collaborative effort between the ED physician group and the hospital.

In the early years of that occupational medicine department, Joe's office was right in the middle of the ED. He not only treated injured employees but performed pre-employment exams right in the midst of the ER chaos. In 1997 Job Care was moved out of the ED, and its occasional hysteria, into its own space. Today Job Care occupies a less chaotic corner of the hospital campus. Joe brings his background in physical therapy and his history as a Vietnam Medic to the way he calmly practices medicine.

Joe is a member of the California Association for Nurse Practitioners.

Joe grew up in Santa Cruz, California but has made Ukiah his home for over 22 years. He lives with his wife of 34 years. They have two grown children. Their son is in construction and their daughter is an ER Nurse. Both Joe and his wife Chris have been fortunate to have extended family in the Ukiah Valley.

Joe and Chris are involved with a group of friends who have been making wine for the past 6 years. Their Zin took first place in the Mendocino County Fair two years ago. They continue perfecting their wine. Joe loves the whole process of harvest, crush, fermentation, blending and bottling. He is thrilled that this hobby connects him to the seasons and that it also brings the grown kids back home to participate in the process.

Joe is involved with a group that takes high school students to Mexico each year to work on building projects for orphanages and other needed shelter. This keeps him young, but tired, each April.
